Trout Lake Information
Vilas County’s largest lake, mighty Trout Lake has an aura and personality that makes it one of the area’s most sought-after destinations. Almost 17 miles of shoreline contains this pristine waterway, and most of that land is owned by the State of Wisconsin, keeping it undeveloped for all time. Trout Lake is something special!
Trout Lake’s east shore features Ben Bendrick Road, the original route to nearby Boulder Junction, both for early motorcars and trains, and now used for low speed sightseers and as a part of the popular Boulder Junction Bike Trail. This roadway meanders along two miles of exquisite lake views, framed by tall red and white pine. Ben Bendrick Road is THE PLACE to view spectacular Northwoods sunsets across three miles of shimmering water.
There are two state-owned campgrounds along the east shore, and several primitive canoe camp sites here and there. Sprinkled among the deep clear water are several islands; all but one state owned. And a visit to the lake must include a trip out to Cathedral Point; so named due to the beautiful stand of stately pines that soar skyward at the narrows between “North” and “South” Trout. Cathedral point can be accessed by car or bicycle in warmer weather. Picnic facilities and bathrooms are available here, and at the campgrounds.
Fishing guides love the diversity in the species available at Trout Lake. It is a tough lake to fish, due to its immense size (3,816 acres) and depths which plummet to 117 feet. Trout is an excellent walleye lake, and produces huge record muskellunge. Yes, there is a population of Lake Trout here too. Structure is also tricky; Trout Lake is riddled with several rock bars, which are unmarked. Unwary boaters can easily damage a lower drive unit – best to learn the lake before you take off at high speeds.
With nearly 70% of the shoreline publicly owned, the opportunity to acquire real estate is limited. A home on Trout Lake is a legacy purchase that will enhance life for your family for generations.
